What is Martensitic Stainless Steel? 

The defining characteristic of martensitic stainless steel is its unique metallurgical structure. This structure, known as martensite, is a body-centered tetragonal (BCT) form of iron that is created through a specific heat treatment process. When the steel is heated to a high temperature and then rapidly cooled—a process called quenching—the carbon atoms become trapped within the iron crystal lattice. This process prevents the atoms from moving, resulting in a very hard, brittle, and strong material.
