Chemical Composition of EN16T

Annealing

This steel grade is commonly supplied ready heat treated. If further heat treatment is required annealed EN16 should be heated slowly to 840-870°C and after adequate soaking at this temperature quench in oil. Temper as soon as tools reach room temperature.

Hardening

Heat carefully to a suitable temperature selected by reference to a tempering chart or table. Soak at the temperature for 2 hours per 25mm of ruling section, then allow to cool in air. Tempering between 250-375°C is not advised as tempering within this range will seriously reduce the impact value.

Tempering

Its consistent structure allows for reliable and repeatable machining operations.Weldability: Due to its high hardenability, welding 605M36 is challenging and generally not recommended. The heat from welding can create a brittle heat-affected zone (HAZ) that is prone to cracking. If welding is unavoidable, it requires extensive pre-heating (200-300°C) and immediate post-weld stress relief. We advise consulting with a welding expert before attempting to weld this alloy.

At this stage, you ensure full transformation to austenite, which is critical for achieving the desired mechanical properties. It is important to monitor both time and temperature accurately for consistent results.Quenching: Once the steel reaches the correct hardening temperature, perform an oil quench promptly. Oil quenching provides a controlled cooling rate that minimizes the risk of distortion and cracking while ensuring the formation of a martensitic structure. Uniform agitation during quenching further enhances structural integrity.Tempering: After hardening and quenching, temper the material to relieve stresses and fine-tune its properties. The tempering temperature and duration are chosen based on the end use:<ul><li>For maximum strength and moderate toughness (e.g., high-load gears, shafts), temper between 200–300°C. This yields higher hardness but reduced ductility.</li><li>For higher toughness and more flexibility (e.g., dynamic machinery parts, impact-loaded components), temper between 500–650°C.
