X120Mn13 is commonly used in catalogs as an alternate designation for X120Mn12 (Werkstoff 1.3401) X120Mn12 (Werkstoff 1.3401) is an austenitic 12–13% Mn / ~1.2% C Hadfield steel known for extreme impact wear resistance and work-hardening up to ~500 HB, while the core remains tough. What is Manganese Steel?

Manganese Steel, commonly known as Hadfield Steel, is a special alloy containing 12–14% manganese and 1% carbon. This unique composition makes it one of the toughest and most wear-resistant steels ever developed. Unlike conventional steel, manganese steel hardens under impact — the more it’s struck or compressed, the harder its surface becomes.

This self-hardening property makes manganese steel ideal for applications with high abrasion, impact, and deformation, such as crusher jaws, rail crossings, and shovel buckets.

Processing Notes of Manganese steel

• Work-hardens under impact; finish size by machining before service. 
• Welding: use appropriate austenitic Mn consumables and controlled heat input; avoid excessive dilution and overheating. 
• Heat treatment: solution treatment/rapid quench for cast parts (per ASTM A128 practice).

Drilling  of Manganese Steel

High manganese steel is difficult to drill due to the 11 to 14% manganese content and will work hard very quickly. Heavy-duty, very rigid machinery is required using either armor-piercing drills in 8% cobalt high speed steel, or preferably, use special drills with replaceable carbide inserts. Avoid center punching or allowing the drill to rub on the surface without the feed being engaged, as this has the effect of work hardening.
