What is Nitriding Steel
Nitrided steel is alloy steel specifically designed for nitriding — a method where nitrogen diffuses into the surface of the steel at 500–550°C. The process leaves a hard, abrasion-resistant outer layer and maintains a tough, ductile core. Nitrided steel typically contains aluminum, chromium, and molybdenum. These induce nitrogen to react and form nitrides, increasing hardness and fatigue resistance. Unlike case-hardening steel, nitriding steel does not involve quenching, thus there is no distortion or cracking risk.
