What Is 1.4418 / X4CrNiMo16-5-1 Stainless Steel?
1.4418 (X4CrNiMo16-5-1) is a low-carbon martensitic stainless steel alloyed with chromium, nickel, and molybdenum, designed to combine high mechanical strength with good corrosion resistance. It belongs to the precipitation-hardenable / quench-and-temper family and is commonly supplied in condition QT900 — yielding a minimum 0.2% proof strength of 900 MPa with retained toughness, making it significantly stronger than standard austenitic grades such as 316L while retaining adequate corrosion resistance for marine and oil & gas service.
Also known as S165M (BS), EN 1.4418, or DIN X4CrNiMo16-5-1, this grade is widely specified for pump and propeller shafts, valve stems, hydraulic cylinder rods, and offshore connectors.
