What is 431 Stainless Steel ?

AISI 431, also identified by designations UNS S43100 and 1.4057, is a high-chromium, nickel-bearing martensitic stainless steel. This grade is specifically engineered to deliver an exceptional combination of high tensile strength, excellent toughness, and good corrosion resistance. The inclusion of approximately 15-17% chromium and a strategic addition of nickel (1.25-2.50%) provides superior corrosion resistance compared to other martensitic grades like 410 and 420. This makes it a suitable material for applications exposed to marine atmospheres and various corrosive media. 

One of the defining characteristics of 431 stainless steel is its ability to be hardened through heat treatment. In its hardened and tempered condition, it can achieve tensile strengths upwards of 1000 MPa, making it one of the most robust martensitic stainless steels available. Its high yield strength and notable hardness contribute to excellent wear resistance, a critical attribute for components subjected to friction and abrasion. 

Grade 431 is magnetic in all conditions, including annealed, hardened, and tempered states. While its weldability is limited and requires careful control of pre-heating and post-weld heat treatment to prevent cracking, its machinability is fair in the annealed condition.
