What is 440C Stainless Steel (UNS S44004 / EN 1.4125) 

440C, designated as UNS S44004 and EN 1.4125, is a high-carbon chromium stainless steel. Its martensitic microstructure, achieved through specific heat treatment processes, provides a unique combination of extreme hardness, excellent wear resistance, and good strength. 

The high carbon content, typically between 0.95% and 1.20%, is crucial for forming chromium carbides, which contribute significantly to the material's hardness and abrasion resistance. While its corrosion resistance is lower than that of austenitic grades, it is sufficient for environments involving fresh water, mild acids, and industrial atmospheres, especially when the surface is polished.
