What Is AH36 Shipbuilding Steel?
AH36 is a high-strength structural steel plate specified under ASTM A131 and certified by international marine classification societies including ABS, DNV-GL, Lloyd’s Register (LR), and Bureau Veritas (BV). It belongs to the “H-series” of high-strength shipbuilding grades, where the numeric “36” denotes a minimum yield strength of 36 ksi (355 MPa) — significantly higher than normal-strength Grade A shipbuilding steel at 235 MPa. AH36 steel is the most widely stocked and specified grade for ship hull construction, offshore platform plating, and marine fabrication in temperate and tropical service environments worldwide.
The “A” prefix in AH36 designates the lowest Charpy V-notch (CVN) impact test requirement in the H-series: testing at 0°C with a minimum average of 34 J. For colder operating regions, DH36 (tested at −20°C) and EH36 (tested at −40°C) are the appropriate grades. For most UAE, GCC, and tropical marine projects, AH36 material is the standard and correct specification.
At Nifty Alloys, we supply AH36 steel plates from our Dubai warehouse with ABS, DNV-GL, and Lloyd’s Register class certificates and EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates, ready for immediate dispatch to UAE, GCC, and global marine and offshore destinations.
