What Is AISI 422 Stainless Steel?
AISI 422 (UNS S42200), also known as SS422, Alloy 422, or AISI 616, is a hardenable martensitic stainless steel specifically engineered for high-temperature, high-stress applications. It belongs to the martensitic stainless steel family — magnetic, heat-treatable, and capable of achieving significantly higher mechanical strength than austenitic grades such as 304 or 316.
What sets AISI 422 apart from standard martensitic stainless steel grades like AISI 410 or 403 is its enhanced alloy chemistry: the addition of molybdenum (Mo), vanadium (V), and tungsten (W) to the chromium-nickel base significantly improves creep-rupture strength and temper resistance at elevated temperatures up to 1200°F (649°C). This makes AISI 422 the martensitic stainless steel of choice for steam turbine blades, gas turbine compressor components, high-temperature bolting, and aerospace structural parts.
