What Is API 5L Line Pipe Steel?
API 5L (API Spec 5L) is the primary American Petroleum Institute specification for line pipe used in the transportation of oil, natural gas, water, and other fluids in the petroleum and natural gas industries. It is harmonised with ISO 3183, making API 5L / ISO 3183 the globally recognised standard for pipeline construction across onshore and offshore oil and gas projects worldwide.
The specification covers two Product Specification Levels (PSL): PSL1 for standard quality line pipe, and PSL2 for higher-integrity applications requiring additional chemical, mechanical, and Charpy V-notch impact testing requirements. API 5L grades range from Grade A (L175) through Grade B (L245) and the high-strength “X” grades — X42, X46, X52, X56, X60, X65, X70, and X80 — where the two-digit number denotes the minimum yield strength in ksi (e.g. X52 = 52 ksi / 360 MPa minimum yield).
