What Is ASTM A53 / A53M Carbon Steel Pipe?
ASTM A53 (also written ASTM A53/A53M or ASME SA-53) is the standard specification for welded and seamless steel pipe used in mechanical and pressure applications. It is one of the most widely specified and stocked carbon steel pipe standards in the world, covering black and hot-dipped galvanized pipe for use in steam, water, gas, and air service. ASTM A53 covers two grades — Grade A and Grade B — and three manufacturing types: Type E (electric resistance welded / ERW), Type S (seamless), and Type F (furnace-butt welded, largely obsolete).
Grade B (A53 Gr B) is the dominant grade in engineering and oil & gas procurement, with a minimum yield strength of 241 MPa (35 ksi) and minimum tensile strength of 414 MPa (60 ksi). It is interchangeably referenced as a53 gr b, a53b pipe, steel a53, or carbon steel a53 in procurement documents. The ASME equivalent is SA-53, used under the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC).
API 5L PSL1 Grade B (L245) is the oil and gas pipeline equivalent — a closely related grade with similar mechanical properties but a different application scope (line pipe for petroleum transmission vs. ASTM A53’s broader pressure and structural applications). At Nifty Alloys, we supply ASTM A53 Gr B and API 5L PSL1 Gr B pipe in seamless and ERW forms from our Dubai warehouse, with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates for full traceability.
