What Is BS1452 Grade 200 Cast Iron?

The BS1452 standard is the British specification for grey cast iron, classifying grades by their minimum tensile strength in MPa. Grade 200 is the lowest-strength grade in the BS1452 series, which spans from Grade 150 (now largely obsolete) through to Grade 350. Despite being the entry-level grade, it remains one of the most commercially important due to the combination of properties its microstructure delivers.

In the equivalent European standard, BS1452 Grade 200 is designated EN-GJL-200 under EN 1561. Both designations refer to the same material: a flake graphite grey iron with a pearlitic or ferritic-pearlitic matrix, in which graphite is present as type A or B flakes distributed through the iron matrix. This graphite morphology is directly responsible for the material's characteristic grey fracture surface, excellent machinability (graphite flakes act as chip breakers), strong vibration damping, and inherent lubricity at sliding surfaces.

Grade 200 is the preferred choice when ease of machining and damping are the primary design criteria rather than load-bearing tensile strength. It is the workhorse of the grey iron family for general engineering, automotive, and light industrial applications.
