What is Copper Chromium? 

Copper Chromium is an alloy primarily composed of copper with a small, critical addition of chromium. Designated as UNS C18200, C18150, and C18000, this material is part of the heat-treatable copper alloy family. The manufacturing process involves solution heat treatment followed by quenching and then age-hardening. This process causes the chromium to precipitate out of the solid solution, forming fine particles within the copper matrix. 

This structural change is the key to the alloy's enhanced properties. The finely dispersed chromium particles impede the movement of dislocations within the crystal structure, significantly increasing the material's strength, hardness, and resistance to softening at elevated temperatures. This strengthening mechanism is achieved with only a minor reduction in electrical and thermal conductivity, creating a unique and valuable balance of properties not found in pure copper.
