EN3 steel is a very low carbon mild steel grade specified under the British Standard BS 970. It is characterized by its excellent weldability and ductility, making it a staple material for general engineering and fabrication purposes where high strength is not a primary requirement. As a "mild steel," EN3 typically contains low levels of carbon (approximately 0.25% maximum), which ensures it remains soft and malleable compared to higher carbon counterparts.
This grade is widely recognized for its ease of fabrication. It does not possess high tensile strength or wear resistance, but it excels in scenarios requiring significant forming, bending, or welding. EN3 is generally supplied in the "as-rolled" condition, though it can be normalized to improve its grain structure. Because of its low carbon content, it is not suitable for through-hardening by heat treatment, although it can be case-hardened to improve surface wear resistance while maintaining a tough core.
