The Unified Numbering System (UNS) is a standardized identification system for metals and alloys. It assigns a unique alphanumeric code to each material grade based on its chemical composition. Developed to correlate the many different numbering systems used by technical societies, trade associations, and individual producers, UNS provides a single, consistent reference point for materials used in global commerce. 

A UNS number consists of a single-letter prefix followed by five digits. For example, the widely used 316 grade of stainless steel is designated as UNS S31600.
