What Is Cast Iron Bar?

Cast iron bar is a semi-finished engineering material produced by melting iron with carbon (typically 2.5–4%) and silicon, then casting the melt into bar or rod form. The high carbon content gives cast iron its characteristic hardness, compressive strength, and excellent machinability — properties that make it a preferred alternative to steel in applications where vibration damping, wear resistance, and ease of machining are more important than tensile strength or impact toughness.

Two main families dominate industrial use:

• Grey cast iron (EN-GJL / BS1452): Carbon is present as graphite flakes, which give the material excellent damping capacity, good machinability, and the characteristic grey fracture surface. Grades range from EN-GJL-200 to EN-GJL-350.
• Ductile (spheroidal graphite / SG) iron (EN-GJS / BS2789): Magnesium treatment causes graphite to form as spheroids, significantly improving tensile strength, ductility and impact resistance over grey iron. Grades range from BS2789 400-15 to 700-2.
